Kids Carbon Calculator
We want to put kids first. We have produced a simple, pictorial calculator for kids that has already been used in schools across the UK. The adult calculator will soon follow. What's the problem? The things we do all the time, driving cars, flying in planes, or even having a hot bath produce gases. Even the power we use in our homes is mostly generated from power stations burning fossil fuels like gas or coal which produce greenhouse gases. We call these greenhouse gases because as they build up they are making the Earth hotter and hotter. The main greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide (CO2), usually called “carbon” for short. This global warming doesn’t just mean hotter weather. All over the world the weather is becoming more extreme. Many fields are dry while others are flooded, and the problems will get much worse unless everyone acts to cut the greenhouse gases we put into the atmosphere. What can you do? We can all do something to make it better. You can start by measuring your own “carbon footprint”. That’s a measure of your personal contribution to global warming. Then, you can tell your friends to measure theirs too. See who can get the lowest and become a real Planet Positive hero! Your carbon footprint. Start the Carbon Calculator to work out your footprint. As you do this you’ll see the kinds of things you do in your life that cause greenhouse gases. If you can make some simple changes to do less of these things then you’ll reduce your carbon footprint. Get the answer. Work through the next few screens and if you get stuck or you’ve got any questions then ask an adult. If he or she isn’t sure then try to find the answer together. There’s plenty of information on the Internet, and some useful links right here on the Planet Positive website. |
